Handicapped lift dumped into pool
news@woburnonline.com

WOBURN - Recreation dept. officials discovered an expensive handicap lift submerged at the bottom of the recently renovated Schelzi Pool at Ferullo Field early Friday morning.

According to police reports, seasonal employees arrived at the North Woburn pool area at approximately 9 a.m. last Friday and spotted the $6,000 lift laying on the bottom of the popular swimming hole.

The lift, which weighs more than 500 pounds, also chipped the bottom pool tiles when it settled on the ground. The tiles had just been refurbished during a renovation of the facility prior to the summer.

Recreation Director Rory Lindstrom told police that a lifeguard had closed and secured the pool at approximately 10 p.m. the night prior, leading her to believe that the lift was tossed into the water sometime in the early morning hours.

Officer David Simonds, who investigated the act of vandalism, was also informed about a group of youths, between the ages of 14 and 18 years old, who apparently loiter around the pool after hours on a regular basis.

It is still unclear as to whether the lift still functions, as recreation dept. officials had yet to pull it from the water when police reports were made.
